View and edit files

Open code, markdown and PDF, make light edits in the app, and hand off to VS Code for heavy editing.

Files opened from the Files mode tree or quick open (Ctrl+P, macOS ⌘P) open as tabs.

  • Code: TypeScript, JavaScript, JSON, CSS, HTML, YAML and markdown get syntax highlighting. Other text files open as plain text.
  • Markdown: switches between preview and edit.
  • PDF: opens in the built-in PDF viewer.
  • Drawings: .excalidraw.md files open in Excalidraw. See Drawings (Excalidraw).

Files open in edit view. Switch with the Preview button in the toolbar (Edit while previewing) or Ctrl+Shift+M (macOS ⌘⇧M).

  • Preview renders GitHub-flavored markdown (tables, checkboxes and so on).
  • Links open with a plain click in preview, and with Ctrl+click (macOS ⌘+click) in edit view. Web addresses open in the browser. Files in the project and wiki links ([[note]]) open as tabs.
  • Ctrl+B (macOS ⌘B) makes text bold.

Save with Ctrl+S (macOS ⌘S). Unsaved tabs show ● before the title. Turn on autosave and set its delay in the Editor tab of the settings (off by default). The same tab sets the font, font size and line wrapping.

In the Files mode tree, right-click a connected folder row for New File, New Folder and New Excalidraw Drawing. File rows have Copy, Copy Name, Copy Path, Rename and Delete. Copy Name and Copy Path put text on the system clipboard, while Copy holds the file for pasting inside the app. You can also select several rows to copy, cut and paste them (see Keyboard shortcuts).

When you move or rename a file, Belloga can update the markdown links that point to it. Pick always, ask or never in the General tab of the settings.

Belloga notices when Claude Code or another editor changes an open file.

  • Text and markdown tabs without your edits reload just the changed part right away. Drawing and PDF tabs reload too.
  • If you save a tab you were editing and the file on disk is newer, Belloga does not overwrite it and shows a notice bar. Use Compare to see the difference between the disk content and yours, then pick Overwrite or Revert to disk.
  • If the file is deleted, the tab title gets “(deleted)”. Saving the tab creates the file again.

Open in VS Code in the file toolbar opens the current file in VS Code. To open a whole worktree folder, use the More actions menu on its worktree card.
